Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim

1719–1803 · 18th century

Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim was a German poet of the Anacreontic school who served from 1747 as secretary of the cathedral chapter at Halberstadt. His patriotic Prussian war songs, written in the voice of a grenadier, celebrated Frederick the Great in the Seven Years' War, and he was a generous friend and correspondent of many writers. His house in Halberstadt, the Gleimhaus, is now a literary museum.
