Johann Weikhard von Valvasor

1641–1693 · 17th century · Also known as Janez Vajkard Valvasor

Johann Weikhard von Valvasor was a Carniolan nobleman and polymath, born in Ljubljana. He travelled widely, set up a printing and engraving workshop at his castle of Bogenšperk and wrote The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, published in 1689. His study of the intermittent Lake Cerknica earned him membership of the Royal Society in London, but the costs of publication ruined him.
