House of Andechs

Also known as Andechs-Merania, Counts of Andechs, Andechs-Meranien, counts of Andechs

The counts of Andechs were a Bavarian noble family named after their castle above the Ammersee. In 1180 they took the title of dukes of Merania, and they held wide lands in Bavaria, Franconia, Tyrol, Istria and Carniola. Their daughters included Saint Hedwig of Silesia and Agnes of Merania, wife of Philip II of France. The male line died out in 1248, and Andechs later became a monastery.
