John Frum movement

1930s– · 20th century

The John Frum movement is a religious movement on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu, often described as a cargo cult. It arose in the late 1930s around a figure called John Frum, who promised the islanders wealth if they abandoned missionary rule and returned to custom. The arrival of large American forces in the New Hebrides during the Second World War strengthened the belief, and followers still hold an annual celebration on 15 February.
