John Gabalas

fl. 1240–1250 · 13th century

John Gabalas was a Byzantine Greek lord of Rhodes who succeeded his brother Leo Gabalas around 1240. Ruling under the loose overlordship of the Empire of Nicaea, he lost the island when the Genoese seized it in a surprise attack in 1248. Nicaean forces recovered Rhodes soon after, and the island never regained its independence.
