Leo Gabalas

fl. 1204–1240 · 13th century

Leo Gabalas was a Byzantine Greek magnate who seized Rhodes and nearby islands after the Fourth Crusade broke up the Byzantine Empire in 1204. He ruled them as an independent lord with the title of Caesar, recognising the Empire of Nicaea only loosely and making a treaty with Venice in 1234. After his death around 1240 his brother John held Rhodes until Nicaea took direct control.
