John Locke

1632–1704 · 17th century

John Locke was an English philosopher whose Two Treatises of Government and Essay Concerning Human Understanding, published around 1689, shaped liberal political thought and empiricism. As secretary to Anthony Ashley Cooper he helped draft the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina. He lived in exile in the Dutch Republic in the 1680s and argued that government rests on the consent of the governed and must protect life, liberty and property.
