Joost van Vollenhoven

1877–1918 · 20th century

Joost van Vollenhoven was a Dutch-born French colonial administrator who became governor-general of French West Africa in 1917. He resigned the same year in protest against renewed mass recruitment of African soldiers for the First World War, which he believed would ruin the colonies, and returned to the army. He was killed in action in France in July 1918.
