d. 79 CE · 1st century

Julius Sabinus was a nobleman of the Lingones in Gaul who, during the revolt of the Batavi in 69–70 CE, proclaimed himself Caesar and led his people against Rome. Defeated by the Sequani, he spread word of his death and hid with his wife Epponina in an underground refuge for nine years. Discovered and taken to Rome, he was executed on the orders of Vespasian.
