Justicialist Party

founded 1946 · 20th century · Also known as Partido Justicialista, PJ, Peronist Party, Partido Peronista

The Justicialist Party, also known as the Peronist Party, is a major political party in Argentina and the largest branch within Peronism. It was founded in 1946 by Juan Perón and Eva Perón, uniting the three parties that had supported Perón in the election. Its most consistent base of support has been the General Confederation of Labor, Argentina's largest trade union. All Peronist entities were banned from elections after Perón was overthrown in 1955, until his return to Argentina in 1973. Aside from Juan Perón, eleven presidents of Argentina have belonged to the party, among them Carlos Menem, Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
