Kanaung Mintha

1820–1866 · 19th century · Also known as Kanaung Prince

The Kanaung Prince, or Kanaung Mintha, was a Burmese prince, younger brother and heir of King Mindon and the leading reformer of his court. He commanded the army and directed modernisation, sending students abroad and setting up factories and arsenals with European help. He was assassinated in 1866 by two of Mindon's sons, the Myingun and Myingondaing princes, in a failed rebellion that halted the reforms.
