Pagan Min

1811–1880 · 19th century

Pagan Min was king of Burma from 1846 to 1853, the son of Tharrawaddy. His reign was marked by the execution of rivals and arbitrary rule, and a dispute over the treatment of British ship captains at Rangoon led to the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852, in which Britain annexed Lower Burma. He was deposed by his half-brother Mindon in 1853 and lived on in retirement.
