Karađorđe

1768–1817 · 18th century · Also known as Karađorđe Petrović, Black George

Karađorđe was a livestock trader and former Austrian volunteer whom an assembly at Orašac chose in February 1804 to lead the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman janissaries. He won major victories and ruled revolutionary Serbia as supreme leader until the Ottomans crushed the uprising in 1813. On his return in 1817 he was murdered on Miloš Obrenović's orders, founding the feud of two dynasties.
