Karaikal

Karaikal is a coastal town on the Coromandel Coast of south-east India, in the Kaveri delta. France acquired it from the Raja of Thanjavur in 1739 and governed it as part of French India until its de facto transfer to India in 1954, completed legally in 1962. It forms a district of the Union Territory of Puducherry, although it is surrounded by Tamil Nadu.
