Karl Ludwig Sand

1795–1820 · 19th century

Karl Ludwig Sand was a German theology student and member of the radical student fraternity movement who stabbed the conservative writer August von Kotzebue to death in Mannheim in March 1819. He was executed in 1820. Metternich used the murder to justify the Carlsbad Decrees, which imposed censorship and supervision of the universities throughout the German Confederation.
