Karlskirche

1716–1737 · 18th century

The Karlskirche is a Baroque church in Vienna dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, built by Emperor Charles VI in fulfilment of a vow made during the plague of 1713. Designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed by his son Joseph Emanuel between 1716 and 1737, it combines a great dome with a classical portico and two columns modelled on Trajan's Column in Rome, expressing imperial and Catholic claims.
