Kharga Oasis
The Kharga Oasis is the southernmost of the major oases of Egypt's Western Desert, about 200 kilometres west of the Nile valley. It lay on the Darb el-Arbain caravan route to Sudan and has been settled since prehistoric times. Its monuments include the Temple of Hibis, built largely under Darius I, Roman forts and the early Christian cemetery of El-Bagawat.
