Kigeli V Ndahindurwa

1936–2016 · 20th century · Also known as Kigeli V of Rwanda

Kigeli V Ndahindurwa was the last king of Rwanda, from July 1959 to 1961. A half-brother of Mutara III Rudahigwa, he was installed by court conservatives after Mutara's sudden death. The Hutu revolution and Belgian policy stripped him of power, and he was abroad when the monarchy was abolished at Gitarama and in the referendum of 1961. He lived in exile, mostly in the United States, until his death.
