Kinai
The Kinai, 'the home provinces', was the region around the old Japanese capitals of Nara and Kyoto, made up of the five provinces of Yamashiro, Yamato, Kawachi, Izumi and Settsu. As the land of the imperial court and later of the Ashikaga shoguns, it was the political and economic centre of Japan, and control of it was the goal of the warlords of the 16th century. Roughly the same area forms today's Kansai.
