Hosokawa Harumoto

1514–1563 · 16th century

Hosokawa Harumoto was a Japanese warlord who served as kanrei, deputy to the Ashikaga shogun, and dominated Kyoto in the 1530s and 1540s. His power rested on his retainers, above all the Miyoshi, but in 1549 Miyoshi Nagayoshi turned against him and defeated his forces at Eguchi, forcing him and the shogun to flee the capital. He lost his authority and died in confinement, marking the eclipse of the Hosokawa family.
