Ashikaga Yoshiteru

1536–1565 · 16th century

Ashikaga Yoshiteru was the thirteenth shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, holding the office from 1546 to 1565. For much of his rule he was overshadowed or driven from Kyoto by Miyoshi Nagayoshi, while trying to restore shogunal authority by mediating between daimyo and studying swordsmanship. In 1565 forces of the Miyoshi elders and Matsunaga Hisamichi attacked his residence and killed him, an event known as the Eiroku Incident.
