King Tom (Koya)

18th century · 18th century

King Tom was a Temne subchief of the Koya kingdom who ruled villages on the Sierra Leone peninsula under King Naimbana in the 1780s. In 1787 he agreed to let British abolitionists settle land on the peninsula for the Province of Freedom, a grant that Naimbana confirmed in 1788. Disputes over the agreement led his successor, King Jimmy, to burn the settlers' Granville Town in 1789.
