Person
Thomas Maitland
Sir Thomas Maitland was a British general and colonial governor who served as governor of Ceylon from 1805 to 1811 and of Malta from 1813. From 1815 he was also the first Lord High Commissioner of the United States of the Ionian Islands, where his autocratic manner earned him the nickname King Tom. He imposed the constitution of 1817, which left the islands' assembly and senate little real power. He died in Malta in 1824.
