Ionian Academy

1824–1864 · 19th century

The Ionian Academy was the first Greek institution of higher education of modern times, founded in Corfu in 1824 under British rule by the philhellene Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford. Teaching in Greek, it trained a generation of scholars, lawyers and doctors for the Ionian Islands and Greece. It declined after the islands were united with Greece in 1864 and was closed soon afterwards.
