d. 295 BCE · 4th century BCE

King Wuling of Zhao ruled the state of Zhao in northern China from 325 to 299 BCE. In 307 BCE he ordered his army to adopt the trousers and mounted archery of the steppe nomads, a reform that made Zhao a leading military power, and he conquered the state of Zhongshan, whose annexation was completed in 296 BCE. After abdicating he was starved to death in a succession struggle in 295 BCE.
