Kocel

d. c. 876 · 9th century · Also known as Koceľ

Kocel was a Slavic prince of Lower Pannonia, the son of Pribina, who ruled from Mosapurc near Lake Balaton as a vassal of the East Frankish kings from 861 to about 876. He welcomed the Byzantine missionaries Cyril and Methodius in 867 and supported their Slavonic liturgy, and at his request the pope made Methodius archbishop of Pannonia in 870. After his death the region returned to direct Frankish rule.
