Kontorhaus District

1920s–1930s · 20th century · Also known as Kontorhausviertel

The Kontorhaus District is an area of large office buildings in central Hamburg, built mainly in the 1920s and 1930s for trading and shipping firms. Its brick buildings, among them the Chilehaus, the Sprinkenhof and the Messberghof, are outstanding examples of Brick Expressionism and modernist architecture. With the neighbouring Speicherstadt it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
