Speicherstadt

1883–1927 · 19th century

The Speicherstadt is a warehouse district in the port of Hamburg, built from 1883 after the city agreed to join the German customs union while keeping a free port. Its red-brick Gothic Revival warehouses, standing on oak piles between canals, form the largest such complex in the world, and about 20,000 people were moved to clear the site. With the Kontorhaus District it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
