Kontor
A Kontor was a foreign trading post of the Hanseatic League, a self-governing community of German merchants with its own aldermen, statutes, treasury and court. The four main Kontore were at Novgorod (the Peterhof), Bergen (the German Wharf, or Bryggen), Bruges and London (the Steelyard). They secured trade privileges from local rulers and imposed strict discipline on resident merchants.
