Steelyard

Also known as London Steelyard

The Steelyard was the Hanseatic League's trading base, or Kontor, in London, a walled compound on the north bank of the Thames near Dowgate. Its German merchants enjoyed customs and legal privileges, and the Treaty of Utrecht of 1474 gave the Hansa ownership of the site. Elizabeth I revoked the privileges in 1598, and Cannon Street station now stands on the site.
