Kouroukan Fouga

The Kouroukan Fouga is the founding charter traditionally attributed to the assembly convened by Sundiata Keita after the creation of the Mali Empire in the thirteenth century. Preserved in oral tradition, it set out rules for the empire's social organisation, clan relations and governance. It is often cited as one of the earliest constitutional texts in Africa.
