Koza riot

1970 · 20th century

The Koza riot was an outbreak of violence in the city of Koza, now Okinawa City, on the night of 20 December 1970, during the American administration of Okinawa. After a traffic accident in which an American serviceman hit a local man, a crowd of thousands attacked US military police and burned around 80 cars belonging to Americans. It expressed years of anger at crimes by servicemen and added pressure for the return of Okinawa to Japan.
