Okinawa Reversion Agreement
The Okinawa Reversion Agreement was a treaty between the United States and Japan, signed on 17 June 1971, under which the Ryukyu Islands, administered by the United States since 1945, returned to Japanese sovereignty on 15 May 1972. The United States kept its military bases on Okinawa under the Japan–US security treaty, and the agreement became controversial for secret arrangements on nuclear weapons and costs.
