Krittibas Ojha

fl. c. 1400 · 15th century · Also known as Krittivas Ojha, Krittivasa

Krittibas Ojha was a Bengali poet who wrote the Krittivasi Ramayan, a free retelling of the Sanskrit Ramayana in Bengali verse, probably in the early fifteenth century. Written in simple language and adding episodes from Bengali devotion, it became the most popular version of the epic in Bengal, recited and read in households for centuries, and helped establish Bengali as a literary language.
