Kristang

Also known as Kristang people, Portuguese Eurasians of Malacca

The Kristang are a Eurasian community of Malacca in Malaysia and of Singapore, descended from Portuguese settlers of the 16th and 17th centuries who married local women. They are mostly Roman Catholic and speak, or once spoke, Papia Kristang, a Portuguese-based creole. A settlement founded for them in Malacca in the 1930s, the Portuguese Settlement, remains the centre of their community.
