Kufa
Kufa was a garrison city founded by Arab Muslim forces in southern Iraq in the 630s during the Rashidun conquests. It became a major political and religious centre and served as the capital of the caliph Ali. Its population played a central role in the conflicts that ended the Rashidun Caliphate, and it remained a centre of Alid sympathy.
