La Goulette

La Goulette is a port town on the narrow channel linking the Lake of Tunis with the Gulf of Tunis, serving as the harbour of Tunis. Its fortress was captured by Charles V in 1535 and held by Spain until an Ottoman force under Sinan Pasha took it in 1574. In the 19th and 20th centuries it had a large Italian, Maltese and Jewish population.
