Djerba

Also known as Jerba

Djerba is an island in the Gulf of Gabès off southern Tunisia, the largest in North Africa. Long a trading and fishing centre, it has an ancient Jewish community and an Ibadi Muslim population. In the Middle Ages it was repeatedly fought over by Sicily, Aragon and the Hafsids, and later by Spain and the Ottomans, notably in the Battle of Djerba of 1560.
