Gulf of Gabès
The Gulf of Gabès, known in antiquity as the Lesser Syrtis, is a gulf of the Mediterranean on the eastern coast of Tunisia, between Sfax and the island of Djerba. Its shallows and shifting sandbanks made it notorious among ancient sailors. The coastal trading towns around it and to the north, the Emporia, were rich prizes contested between Carthage and Numidia.
