La Noche Triste

1520 · 16th century · Part of the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire

La Noche Triste, the 'Night of Sorrows', was the night in 1520 when Hernan Cortes and his Spanish forces and allies fled Tenochtitlan under attack by the Aztecs. Many Spaniards and allied warriors were killed during the retreat across the causeways. The Spanish regrouped with their Tlaxcalan allies and returned to besiege and conquer the city, ending the Aztec Empire in 1521.
