La Rochelle
La Rochelle is a port city on the Atlantic coast of western France, in the old province of Aunis. In the Middle Ages it exported wine and salt to northern Europe and passed between the English and French crowns, falling to Louis VIII in 1224. It later became a Huguenot stronghold, taken by Cardinal Richelieu after the siege of 1627–1628, and a base of French trade with the Americas.
