La Rioja (Spain)
La Rioja is an autonomous community of northern Spain in the upper Ebro valley, with Logroño as its capital. It is famous for Rioja wine. The monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla preserve some of the earliest written glosses in Castilian and Basque. In the Middle Ages the region was contested between the kingdoms of Navarre and Castile, which secured it in 1176.
