Pellendones

400 BCE – 133 BCE (approx.)

A Celtiberian people of the upper Douro around the Picos de Urbión, living in the high country north of Numantia.

Origins

The Pellendones lived around the sources of the Douro in northern Soria and southern La Rioja from about the 4th century BCE. Pliny counts them among the Celtiberians, and some ancient geographers placed Numantia in their territory rather than that of the Arevaci.

Rule and society

They were a highland people of hillforts and herding, with towns such as Visontium and Augustobriga named by Ptolemy. Their society was probably organised in clans under local elites like that of their Celtiberian neighbours, but no details are recorded.

Decline and legacy

They were drawn into the Celtiberian wars against Rome and came under Roman control after the fall of Numantia in 133 BCE, becoming part of Hispania Citerior.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
