La Trinitaria

1838–1844 · 19th century · Also known as The Trinitarians

La Trinitaria was a secret society founded in Santo Domingo on 16 July 1838 by Juan Pablo Duarte and his companions to free the eastern part of Hispaniola from Haitian rule. Its members, organised in cells of three, spread the cause of a sovereign Dominican Republic under the motto Dios, Patria, Libertad. Its leaders proclaimed independence on 27 February 1844, though Duarte was soon sidelined by Pedro Santana.
