Lake Salpetén
Lake Salpetén is a small lake in the Petén department of northern Guatemala, just east of Lake Petén Itzá, whose water is notably saline. In the Postclassic period the Kowoj Maya settled its shores, with Zacpetén on a peninsula as their main centre. Its sediments have been studied for evidence of ancient Maya land use and erosion.
