Lake Tana

Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile. Its islands are home to ancient monasteries that are important centres of Ethiopian Christianity. During the invasion by the Adal Sultanate under Ahmad ibn Ibrahim in the sixteenth century, monasteries around Lake Tana were among those destroyed.
