Ethiopian highlands

The Ethiopian highlands are a large mountainous plateau in the Horn of Africa. Their fertile land and natural defences made them the heartland of the Aksumite Empire and its Christian successors, and their invasion by the Adal Sultanate in the sixteenth century came close to destroying the Ethiopian state.
