Lanceiros Negros

Also known as Black Lancers

The Lanceiros Negros ('Black Lancers') were cavalry units of enslaved and freed black men who fought for the Riograndense Republic during the Ragamuffin War in southern Brazil, on the promise of freedom. In November 1844 many were killed in a surprise attack at Porongos, an episode long suspected of being arranged as part of the peace negotiations.
