Negros
Negros is the fourth-largest island of the Philippines, in the central Visayas, divided between the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. From the mid-19th century its western plains became the centre of the country's sugar industry, dominated by large haciendas. In November 1898 local revolutionaries overthrew Spanish rule and briefly set up the Republic of Negros, which soon accepted American authority.
