Iloilo City

Iloilo City is a port city on the south-east coast of Panay in the western Visayas of the Philippines. Opened to foreign trade in 1855, it prospered in the 19th century as the outlet for sugar from Panay and Negros and for local textiles, and its merchant families led the revolution in the region in 1898. The Spanish garrison surrendered there in December 1898, and American forces took the city in February 1899.
